Liam Scales, born in Ireland on 8 August 1998 (age 27), joined Celtic from Shamrock Rovers in August 2021. A left-sided central defender, he arrived after a strong spell in Dublin, with his 2021 league campaign at Rovers bringing 23 appearances and two goals before the move to Glasgow.
His early Celtic career was not a straight line. A loan spell away from the club gave him the run of football he needed, and he returned better equipped for the demands of the first team. That matters with Scales, because his progress has been built less on noise than on persistence, availability and steady improvement.
He has since become a proper part of the Celtic squad rather than a fringe name passing through. Wearing number five, Scales has won two Premiership titles, two League Cups and one Scottish Cup with Celtic, as well as being part of a side that finished runners-up in another Scottish Cup campaign.
In 2025-26 he remains a regular first-team presence. He has made 37 league appearances, along with four in the League Cup, four in the Scottish Cup, two in Champions League qualifying and nine in the Europa League, scoring twice across those competitions. He has also been involved with the Republic of Ireland, making three World Cup qualifying appearances this season.
His current market value is around ยฃ4.5m, according to Transfermarkt. Scalesโ Celtic career has moved from squad-depth signing to regular defender, shaped by a useful loan spell, a patient return, and a continued role in a side still asking plenty of him.
