Ryan Mullen, our very own home-grown Scotsman, born on 18 May 2001, is now treading water in the hurricane of professional football at 24 years of age. He has carved out a niche for himself as a goalkeeper, now wearing the number 31 jersey for St Mirren, an upgrade for sure. He towers at 1.88m (or 6ft 2in for the imperialists among us) and throws his 80kg (12st 8lb) frame around the goalposts with some enthusiasm; one can only hope it's not just the famous Scottish winds giving him a boost.

In September 2020, Mullen bid adieu to Celtic in the Premiership and headed straight for the cheering crowds of Cove Rangers in League One, Scotland, albeit on loan. By October 2020, it appears the winds of the highlands called him back as he trotted back to Celtic as swiftly as he left. Really, it's less of a game of football and more of a Scottish Highland Fling.

However, it seems the grass was still greener elsewhere, and Mullen found himself on loan again in March 2021, this time at Queen's Park in the Championship before finding his way back to Celtic (again) by June 2021.

After a merry dance, our restless Mullen was at it again in September 2022 when he sauntered away from Celtic for a change of scenery to Clyde in the League Two. In his debut 2022 - 2023 season at Clyde, Mullen graced the pitch for just three first team appearances in league matches. I'm sure it was a memorable experience for the stalwart supporters of Clyde.

On the horses and onto the next hurdle, in July 2023, Mullen tumbled into the welcoming arms of Greenock Morton in the Championship, donned with his trusty gloves, where he had a "bustling" two seasons tallying to 47 first team appearances in league matches.

In July 2025, revelling in the taste of something stronger than Irn-Bru, Mullen embarked on a new adventure from Greenock Morton to take up an ambitious opportunity at St Mirren in the Premiership. I'd suggest he has been drinking more than just Irn-Bru as in the current season 2025 - 2026, the lad has yet to make a first team appearance in league matches.

Well, there you have it, the rhythmic Scottish dance of Ryan Mullen's career: a dab here, a stint there, but always a story to tell. An ever-revolving door of Scottish football, wouldn't you say? Well, keep calm, grab another deep-fried Mars Bar, put your feet up, and let's see where our goalkeeper goes next.
