Stephen Welsh, born in Coatbridge on 19 January 2000 (age 26), is a Scottish central defender who remains a Celtic player while on loan at Swansea City. A commanding 6ft 3in (1.91m), he wears squad number 57 at Celtic and has had a career shaped overwhelmingly by the club.
Greenock Morton provided an important early senior spell, giving Welsh the sort of football that does more for a young defender than another quiet year on the fringes. He returned to Celtic in January 2020 and gradually became part of the first-team picture: not always a regular starter, but trusted often enough to stay in the conversation.
His most productive league season came in 2020-21, when he scored once in 16 league appearances. Across seven seasons at Celtic, he has made 43 league appearances and scored two league goals. During that period he has been part of a squad that won five Premiership titles, three League Cups and two Scottish Cups, with one league runners-up finish as well.
In January 2025, Welsh moved to Swansea City on loan, a straightforward step for a defender needing regular minutes. His current market value is around £1.5m, according to Transfermarkt.
Welsh’s career remains, plainly, a Celtic one: long service, a useful early loan, a steady squad role, and a sizeable haul of honours without any need to overstate his part in them. The Swansea spell now gives him the next proper test of his development.
