Alistair Johnston, born in Vancouver on 8 October 1998 (age 27), is a Canada international right-back and part of the current Celtic squad, wearing number two.
His career had already gathered pace at CF Montreal before Celtic moved for him in January 2023, paying around £3m. His most productive league season came in 2022, when he scored four goals in 33 appearances for Montreal, enough to underline that he was more than just a safe full-back option.
At Celtic, Johnston has become a steady presence on the right side of defence. He has won two Premiership titles, two League Cups and two Scottish Cups since arriving, a decent return for a player who settled without much fuss and has generally kept the job simple. Celtic were also Scottish Cup runners-up once during his time at the club.
In 2025–26, his form has been solid and consistent. He has made seven league appearances without scoring, along with one League Cup appearance in which he scored, one Scottish Cup appearance, one Champions League qualifying appearance and one Europa League appearance. He has also played three times for Canada at the Gold Cup this season. His market value is around £7m, according to Transfermarkt.
Johnston’s career to this point has run from Vancouver to CF Montreal and on to Celtic, where he remains a dependable international full-back in a side that has continued to collect trophies.
