Erik Sviatchenko, born in Viborg on 4 October 1991 (age 34), is a Danish central defender whose career has been shaped far more by FC Midtjylland than by any of his other stops.
He was already well established at Midtjylland when Celtic signed him in January 2016 for around £1.5 million. His spell in Glasgow was respectable rather than transformative: he arrived as a centre-half with decent pedigree, had his moments, and then moved on before becoming a fixture in the side.
Sviatchenko left Celtic in July 2018, returning to FC Midtjylland for around £1 million. That return mattered. Across 14 seasons with the Danish club, he made 231 league appearances and scored 22 league goals, with his most productive league campaign coming in 2019-20, when he scored four times in 24 matches.
He later had a spell with Houston Dynamo, where he has made eight appearances and scored two goals in all competitions. His market value is around £680,000, according to Transfermarkt.
Sviatchenko’s Celtic period sits in the middle of a career otherwise dominated by Midtjylland. He came to Glasgow from there, went back there, and did most of his serious work there.
