Paulo Bernardo, born in Almada on 24 January 2002 (age 24), came through Benfica before his senior career took its proper shape at Celtic. A Portuguese centre midfielder, he joined Celtic from Benfica in September 2023 and has worn the number 28 shirt in a role that has asked for control rather than theatre.
His first season in Glasgow was his most productive in the league, with three goals in 22 appearances in 2023–2024. He has since become a steady part of the midfield picture, reaching 58 league appearances and five league goals across three seasons with the club. Celtic has not been a staging post for him so much as the place where his career has started to mean something.
Bernardo was part of the Celtic side that won the Premiership, League Cup and Scottish Cup in 2024–2025, a useful return for a player still developing his place in the team. He has also been involved in a Scottish Cup runners-up campaign. In 2025–2026, he has remained a regular first-team presence, with 24 appearances across all competitions and one goal, including league, cup and European minutes.
His current market value is around £3m, according to Transfermarkt. Bernardo is still in the building, still young enough to improve, and already has a Celtic career with substance rather than just promise.
