Reo Hatate was born in Suzuka, Mie, Japan, on 21 November 1997 (age 28). A compact central midfielder at 5ft 7in (1.71m), he came to Celtic from Kawasaki Frontale in January 2022 for around £1.5m, part of a Japanese intake that very quickly stopped feeling like a curiosity and started looking like recruitment with a point.
Hatate’s career is now shaped far more by Celtic than by anywhere else. Wearing squad number 41, he has made 132 league appearances for the club across five seasons, scoring 25 league goals. His best return came in 2024–2025, when he scored 10 times in 37 league games, a useful reminder that his value has never been only in tidy midfield work.
His Celtic spell has also been a successful one in hard terms. Hatate has won three Premiership titles, two League Cups and two Scottish Cups, as well as finishing runner-up in one Scottish Cup. Those medals reflect his place in a side that has asked him to do more than decorate possession: he has been expected to carry the ball, link the play and contribute goals from midfield.
He remains a regular first-team presence in 2025–2026. This season he has made 30 league appearances with two goals, alongside outings in the League Cup, Scottish Cup, Champions League qualifying and Europa League. Across all competitions for Celtic in the campaign, he has 47 appearances and six goals.
His current market value is around £8.5m, according to Transfermarkt. That is secondary to the simpler point: Hatate joined from Kawasaki Frontale in 2022 and has become one of the established midfielders of modern Celtic, still relevant, still involved, and still capable of changing the rhythm of a match.
