Dan Burn, born on 9 May 1992 (age 34), is an imposing 6ft 7in (2.01m) defender whose career took the longer road from north-east football to the Premier League. He began at Darlington before Fulham took him south, where the early question was whether his obvious size could be matched by the habits needed for senior football.
The loan spells did a fair bit of that work. Yeovil Town was the important one, giving him regular football and a promotion campaign rather than the usual development-course waffle. A spell at Birmingham City followed, and by the time he returned to Fulham he had been properly exposed to the practical side of defending in the English leagues.
Burn moved on to Wigan Athletic, where he found a more settled rhythm. His most productive league season came in 2017-18, when he scored three goals in 26 appearances. Brighton then signed him, with Wigan still part of the story through a loan back, before he established himself as a useful Premier League defender capable of playing centrally or on the left.
Newcastle United brought him back to the north-east in 2022, and he became a regular first-team player there rather than a sentimental local signing. His market value is around £5m, according to Transfermarkt.
Burn’s career has been built steadily: Darlington, Fulham, formative loans, Wigan, Brighton and Newcastle. It is a solid route rather than a glamorous one, and probably all the more believable for that.
