Gregor Kobel, born on 6 December 1997 (age 28), is a Switzerland goalkeeper and Borussia Dortmund’s number 1. At 6ft 4in (1.93m), he is an imposing presence, and his current market value is around £34m, according to Transfermarkt.
His senior career began at 1899 Hoffenheim, where first-team football came in small doses, including one league appearance in 2018-19. Those early years were about development rather than profile, with loan football helping to move him from prospect to working goalkeeper.
Dortmund is where the career has taken its proper shape. Across six seasons he has made 150 league appearances for the club, a substantial body of work in a position where mistakes tend to travel further than saves. The current campaign has started with one Bundesliga appearance and one in the DFL-Supercup.
He has also remained involved with Switzerland, with World Cup and World Cup qualifying appearances this season. Kobel’s career is now plainly centred on Dortmund: a Swiss goalkeeper who came through the early grind, settled into a major club, and has stayed there long enough for the role to carry real weight.
