Hyeok-kyu Kwon, born 13th March 2001 in the Republic of Korea, is a cunningly composed defensive midfielder, with a knack for decimating opposition attacks. Predominantly taking up the central defensive midfielder position for French side Nantes, Kwon has come a long way since his humble beginnings. Standing at an imposing 6ft 2in (1.9m), and tipping the scales at 12st 1lb (77kg), he routinely dominates the midfield battleground, wearing the proud number 5 on his back. To add to his glittering resume, Kwon has also had the honour of representing his country on the international stage.
In monetary terms, Kwon's expertise on the pitch has a current market value of approximately £590k, as rounded from the original figure of €700k, according to Transfermarkt.
Kwon embarked on his football journey with Busan I'Park of the K League 2 in his native Korea Republic. During his tenure there from January 2019 - accruing 43 first team appearances and netting three goals - Kwon displayed the solidity needed in the core of the midfield.
Later, in March 2021, Kwon enjoyed a loan stint with Gimcheon Sangmu of the K League 1, making 33 appearances – a testament to his consistency.
Once his obligation with Gimcheon Sangmu elapsed, he returned to Busan I'Park in September 2022 and further augmented his tally of performances and goals with the club.
In July 2023, Kwon found himself experiencing Scottish football with none other than Celtic Football Club. His transfer account recorded a deduction of approximately £860k, a meager sum considering the dynamism he brought to the Hoops. Alas, his stay was short-lived and come January 2024, he was despatched on a loan spell to St Mirren, where he received ample opportunities to demonstrate his grittiness, clocking eight first team appearances.
Continuing his tour of Scotland, Kwon moved goalposts to Hibernian in August 2024 on yet another loan spell. Here, he made a promising 21 first team appearances, showcasing the quality of his play.
Eventually, in July 2025, Kwon's Celtic journey ended as the ever-dependable midfielder was released to Nantes in the Ligue 1, with a transfer fee of approximately £220k recorded on the books.
In his current season with Nantes, 2025-2026, Kwon has acquitted himself competently, securing 11 first team appearances and remaining a steadfast anchor in the heart of the midfield.
Despite his intermittent association with Celtic, Kwon's integral efforts during his brief tenure at Celtic Park have positively impacted the club and his name has been etched in the annals of the club's storied history. His journey continues promisingly in French football and his account of firm tackles, precise passing and leadership on the pitch will remain indelibly marked in the minds of the Celtic faithful.
