Spare a thought for Jack Thomson, a man who has spent the entirety of his quarter-century life trying to tell anyone who'd listen that he's good at football. This proud Scot, birthed into the cold winter of 2000, plays primarily as a defensive midfielder for Kilmarnock in the Premiership. Standing at a decent but certainly not towering 5ft 10in (1.8m) and weighing in at 11st 4lb (72kg), he's not exactly setting the world alight, is he? His most admirable trait seems to be that he wears the number 22 jersey. Riveting detail there.
If you find yourself on Transfermarkt, do him a favour and boost his page views. Why, you may ask? To validate a current market value that barely brushes £200k. Not that I’m disputing the assessment.
Thomson's walkabout career path reads less like a footballer's spiral-bound notebook and more like a low-budget travel guide through Scotland. After hightailing it out of Rangers in January 2021, Thomson then found himself bouncing between various clubs on a series of eventful loans, starting with a stint at League Two side Clyde and later touring the United States with Orange County SC.
Apparently Edinburgh was his next port-of-call before deciding Queen's Park would be a lovely spot to settle down for a while. Here, he managed a sparkling performance of 33 first team appearances and a whopping 2 goals in his 2022-2023 debut season, followed by 34 appearances and a solitary goal the following season. In the 2024-2025 season, he thought it best to limit his on-pitch exposure to a mere 13 appearances. A decision we can only presume was merciful for all involved.
Clearly soaring high after his undeniably colourful stint at Queen’s Park, big Jack packed up and headed for Kilmarnock. His current season of 2025-2026 sees him making a singular appearance on the pitch so far. A quantity that, though some would argue isn’t much to pen an article about, seems very fitting for a player who can only be described as 'Jack Thomson'.
