Renowned Rangers midfielder Joe Rothwell, dripping in charm as he lines up in his number 6 jersey, is a bit of an enigma. Born on 11th January 1995, which, coincidentally, makes him ancient at thirty years old for a footballer, he sprints around the field despite his formidable height of 6ft (1.85m) and the weight of 12st 1lb (77kg) he carries about.
Apparently, the number crunchers at Transfermarkt value our jovial Joe at a figure around £1m. Good for him.
In the sunny months of July way back in 2001, little Rothwell decided to give football a go and joined Manchester United as a trainee. Shortly after, in the frosty month of January 2015, he was whisked away on loan to the seaside town of Blackpool, where he managed to grace the pitch a total of three times in the league. Thrilling.
Then off he jaunted to Barnsley for another loan stint in July 2015. He upped his game with a breathtaking four league appearances. A year later, in July 2016, he packed his bags for Oxford United, trading in the hustle and bustle of Manchester for the dreaming spires of Oxfordshire.
Here Joe suited up for 33 league games for season 2016 - 2017, even managing to dink in a goal. In the following season, he appeared 23 times and netted three goals. Rather an improvement, one might suggest.
Blackburn Rovers then got hold of him in July 2018 for a sum undisclosed; they certainly weren't shouting about it from the rooftops. At Blackburn, he had a nice run across several seasons, scoring a handful of goals and making numerous appearances.
From there, he hopped to the Premier League with Bournemouth in 2022. His tenure included a loan stint South at Southampton then an interesting spell up North at Leeds United, before waltzing off to Rangers in the Scottish Premiership in July 2025.
Currently, in the 2025-2026 season, our globe-trotting Rothwell has made a respectable, or otherwise, total of eight appearances for Rangers. He's graced the field in the Champions League Qualifiers, participated, if you want to call it that, in the League Cup, and even emerged from the cloud of Europa League as a sublime substitute. So, all in all, an illustrious career if you're into that sort of thing.
