Ah, the classic journeyman narrative. Today's leaf on the breeze is none other than Lewis Mayo, a strapping bloke hitting his footballing prime a bit later than most, at the age of 25 years. Born and bred on our fair Scottish soil, on the 19th of March, 2000, Mayo's a defender by design, primarily playing as a central defender. Standing at an imposing 6ft 3in (1.91m), and tipping the scales at 12st 12lb (82kg), the man sports the number 5 jersey with a sense of duty, if not originality. Nary a branch on our dear Celtic tree, but worth a dig nonetheless.
We first catch wind of Mayo in July 2016, making the oh-so-ambitious step to join Rangers as a trainee in the Premiership - it's laughable, really. Then comes the parade of loans. In January 2020, our journeyman finds himself transferred to Partick Thistle, back to the Championship. The show continues, and by September 2020, Mayo is on his way, via loan, to Dunfermline Athletic. July 2021 sees him back with Partick Thistle, again on loan. It's a veritable tour of the lower leagues, isn't it?
It's in July 2022 that Mayo lands at Kilmarnock, in the Premiership, albeit still on a loan deal. He gets a taste of consistent play, chalking up 34 appearances in his debut 2022-2023 season. Then, a whopping 36 appearances and a single celebratory goal in the 2023-2024 season. The lad hit a bit of stride in 2024-2025, making 37 appearances. As for this season, he's managed ten starts and still counting. Guess our man's found his new home.
Hardly a surprise then, that in July 2023, Mayo made his move from Rangers to Kilmarnock permanent for a fee that shall forever remain in the annals of undisclosed football 'business'. He's since shown some semblance of consistency, mirroring his previous seasons with Kilmarnock and giving the statisticians a break from keeping up with his merry-go-round of a career.
On a side note, it's worth pointing out that Mayo also participated in the League Cup 2025-2026 for Kilmarnock with six starts, and likewise the Scottish Cup 2024-2025 with a single start. All hail the journeyman, eh?
