Liam Scales, born 8th August 1998 in the Republic of Ireland, is an accomplished defender who, as of date, has made his name in the centre-back division at Celtic. Standing at 6 feet 2 inches in stature (1.88m) and with a weight of about 13st 5lb (85kg), Scales has become a formidable force on the pitch. He does his number 5 jersey proud not just for Celtic but also representing the national team of the Republic of Ireland.
Transfermarkt pegs his market value at around 5.00m euros, which is equivalent to about ยฃ4.5m.
Scales' journey in competitive football began during the winters of 2017, when he signed for UCD in the First Division in the Republic of Ireland for an unrevealed signing fee. His impressive debut in 2019 saw him making 30 first team appearances, managing to net the ball in one of the league matches.
Scales' tenure with Shamrock Rovers was initiated in January 2020 following a switch from UCD. In his time at Shamrock Rovers, active participation was evident as he made 23 first team appearances and scored twice in the 2021 league matches.
However, the calling from Scottish giants Celtic proved to be too good to turn down as Scales transferred to the club in August 2021 for an unmentioned fee. Scales' early days at Celtic Park saw him appear five times in the first team, scoring once in the league during the 2021-2022 season. His performance for the Hoops peaked during the 2023-2024 season, making no less than 34 first team appearances and netting the ball once in league competition.
Despite being loaned out to Aberdeen in July 2022 for the 2022-2023 season, where he took the field 31 times and scored once in league matches, Scales returned to Celtic in June 2023 on completion of his loan period. This return to the Glasgow giants was marked with consistent performances as we saw him make over 26 appearances in each subsequent season, notching up a goal in the 2024-2025 season and already making well over two dozen appearances in the 2025-2026 season, at the time of writing.
His involvement hasn't been limited solely to the league, however, as he's also shown his commitment in the League Cup, netting once in three starts and one substitute appearance, as well as lending his talent to the Scottish Cup, World Cup Qualifiers for the Republic of Ireland, and the Champions and Europa Leagues for Celtic. Scales' performance in the latter, in particular, has been notable as heโs managed to score once in the regarded competition.
