Ah, Luke Amos. Born right on the cusp of a turning tide in British football, February 23, 1997, England. Now gallantly (depending on who you ask) muscling around in the heart of Hibernian's midfield at a towering 5ft 10in (1.79m) and 11st 4lb (72kg). He proudly sports the number 14 shirt, though it must be said the significance of that particular numeration has been lost on this writer.
We first heard of Amos back in July 2013 when he joined Tottenham Hotspur as a trainee. A fine opportunity for a young lad I'm sure, though his debut season couldn't have been all that memorable, given that he only made a single appearance for Spurs in that initial year of 2018 - 2019. But fear not, young Amos was not disheartened. The thrill of the 'big time' had not quite worn off, he simply popped off to Southend United on loan where he became all the more experienced by making...well, three league appearances. The thrill, I'm sure, was palpable.
After his 'handful' of turnouts for Southend United, our plucky midfielder suddenly found himself recalled to Tottenham in June 2017. Back at the big table, dining with the Premier League elite, and during his triumphant return season of 2018 - 2019, he celebrated by collecting a further single appearance for Spurs. A pattern, it seems, was beginning to emerge here.
In January 2018, Amos found himself on loan again, this time to Stevenage. But like a homing pigeon or a boomerang, or like the proverbial bad penny, he returned to Tottenham in June that same year, still apparently eager to add to his single-appearance seasons. With the passage of time, we find Amos once again trying his luck elsewhere, Queens Park Rangers in this instance where he played on loan. And our man didn't disappoint. In 2019 - 2020 he made a record-breaking 34 first team appearances and even knocked in two goals. The seasons afterwards? Well, they saw 'mixed' success, with five, 29, and a decent 21 appearances respectively. One wonders why Tottenham ever let him go.
In a twist that surprised probably nobody, in August 2020, Luke 'Boomerang' Amos officially cut his ties to Tottenham and joined Queens Park Rangers. The transfer fee remains undisclosed, which is one less number for your dear writer to contemplate. He diligently kept accumulating the appearances during his next seasons there, occasionally adding a goal or two for good show. Then in June 2023, he gallantly departed for unknown territories. That is until he resurfaced in January 2024, in our own backyard, Hibernian.
Current tally for Hibs reads seven first team appearances in last year's season and a blossoming single appearance this current 2024 - 2025 season. Well, here's to hoping that our man Luke adds a few more appearances to his belt. If nothing else, he'll always provide us plenty of material to mull over, won't he?
