Standing 1.8m (5ft 10in) tall and weighing in at 77kg (12st 1lb), he primarily played the role of a central defender. McNally's football career took off in May 1987, when he joined Celtic in the Scottish Premiership as a trainee.

In the 1991-1992 season, his contributions grew; he made 25 first team appearances and netted his first goal. McNally's performance remained stable in the subsequent seasons, featuring in 27, 32, and 20 first team matches in the following three seasons respectively. In April 1997, McNally moved from Southend United to Stoke City in the English Championship, where his appearances dwindled down to a total of seven over two seasons. By July 1998, McNally transferred back to his homeland, joining Dundee United in the Scottish Premiership where he made five appearances in league matches in the 1998-1999 season.
