Matt Freese, born on 2 September 1998 (age 27), is an American goalkeeper with the sort of frame clubs tend to notice: a commanding 6ft 4in (1.93m). His early senior league exposure came at Philadelphia Union, where he made six league appearances in 2019.
His career has been shaped far more clearly at New York City FC. Wearing squad number 49, he has made 90 league appearances across four seasons, establishing himself as a regular first-team presence rather than a passing squad option. This season he has made 15 MLS appearances and five in the MLS Cup Play Offs for the club.
Freese has also been involved with the United States, making four World Cup appearances and six in the Gold Cup this season. His market value is around £1.5m, according to Transfermarkt.
He was linked with Celtic in July 2026 while at New York City FC. For now, his career remains centred on New York, where he has moved from useful option to established goalkeeper.
