Matthew Connelly, born in Scotland on 2 March 2003, is a 22-year-old goalkeeper currently signed with Motherwell. Standing at 5ft 10in (1.8m) and weighing 11st (70kg), he sports the number 31 jersey on the field. Given his profession, one would expect that his current market value should reflect his abilities, and according to Transfermarkt, it is approximately £45,000.
The journey of Connelly's career has seen him engage in a few moves and loans. In October 2020, he transferred from Motherwell to Falkirk, both teams playing in the Premiership, on a loan deal. Unfortunately, his tenure at this club didn't last long, and by January 2021, he had returned to Motherwell. Once back in his original team, he was unable to secure a first-team appearance in league matches for the current season of 2025 - 2026.
Continuing his career, Connelly was loaned to Gretna in the Lowland League in July 2021, later returning to Motherwell in October of the same year. Again, he has failed to make a first-team appearance in league matches for the continuing season.
In January 2023, Connelly found himself on loan at Stranraer in the League Two in Scotland where he made five first-team appearances in league matches. The goalkeeper's debut season, however, ended with his return to Motherwell in June 2023.
Keeping up with his trend of loans, Connelly was transferred to East Kilbride in the League Two in December 2023. After another six-month spell, he returned to Motherwell in June 2024. This cycle continued and once again, he was transferred to East Kilbride in August 2024 and returned to Motherwell in June 2025. Despite these regular transitions between clubs, he, unfortunately, has not made any first team appearances for Motherwell in the 2025 - 2026 season.
While currently with Motherwell, in August 2025, he was sent on loan to Airdrieonians in the Championship where he made 11 first-team appearances in league matches. Come October 2025, he returned to his base at Motherwell. Despite the experiences and exposures at various clubs, Connelly has not cracked into the main team in the current season of 2025 - 2026. Nonetheless, one can only hope that his experiences across different clubs in the Scottish leagues will enhance his capabilities and prove beneficial in the long run.
