Oliver Abildgaard was born in Hasseris, Aalborg, on 10 June 1996 (age 30), and came through at AaB before senior football began to harden up the edges. An imposing 6ft 4in (1.93m) defensive midfielder, he had an early loan at Vendsyssel, the sort of spell that tends to matter more than it looks on a CV.
He moved on to Rubin Kazan and then joined Celtic from the Russian club in September 2022. It was a practical addition rather than a headline act: a tall, holding midfielder brought in to add cover and presence in the middle of the pitch. His Celtic spell was brief, and he moved back into continental football soon enough.
Abildgaard’s most productive league season came at Como in 2023-24, when he scored twice in 28 appearances. That was a useful run of games and a reminder that, for all the moving about, he has generally found work as a dependable senior midfielder rather than a project waiting to happen.
He is now with Sampdoria, wearing squad number 28, and has made three Serie B appearances in 2026-27. His career has taken him from Denmark to Russia, Scotland and Italy, with the Celtic stop sitting as a short but clear part of a wider professional path.
