Paul Telfer was born on 21 October 1971 in Scotland. The defender, who primarily played as a right-back, stands at a height of 1.75m (5ft 8in). His weight was recorded as 73kg (11st 6lb).
Telfer's professional career began in November of 1988 when he joined Luton Town in the Championship in England as a trainee. His debut season in 1990-1991 saw him make a modest one appearance for the first team in league matches. This initial groundwork was built upon in the 1991-1992 season with 20 appearances and a goal in league matches. 1992-1993 saw Telfer make a significant leap with 32 appearances and two goals, and in the 1993-1994 season, he made 45 appearances with seven goals to his name. His final season at Luton Town, 1994-1995, saw 46 appearances and nine goals from our man Telfer.
In July 1995, Telfer made a move from Luton Town to Coventry City, also in the Championship, for a fee of approximately £1.5m. His first season brought about 31 appearances and a goal, proceeding to make steady appearances in the following seasons from 1996 to 2001, with particular highlight on the 1997-98 season where he scored three goals.
In November 2001 he transferred from Coventry City to Southampton in the Premier League. There, he had a stable run from 2001 to 2005, each season recording over 28 appearances with a notable season in 2003-2004 where he made 37 premier league appearances.
July 2005 saw Telfer make his move northward, transferring from Southampton to Celtic in the Scottish Premiership for around £150k. He made a splendid impression in his first season, 2005-2006, featuring in 36 matches and netting one goal. His service continued into the 2006-2007 season with 21 appearances.
Upon completing his time at Celtic, Telfer made his return to England, transferring to Bournemouth in the Premier League in July 2007. His tenure there was mildly fruitful, with 18 appearances in the 2007-2008 season. In August 2008, he moved within England again, transferring from Bournemouth to Leeds United in the Championship. In his single season at Leeds, 2008 - 2009, Telfer made 14 appearances.
All in all, his career showcased a journeyman ethic, yet his time at Celtic stands out with steadfast performances and a few memorable goals. His effort in the Hoops made a significant impact on the trophy-filled seasons of 2005 - 2007.
