Sammie Szmodics, born 24 September 1995, hails from England. A forward by design, he is presently plying his trade as a left winger for Derby County, sporting the number 19 jersey. His stature, standing at 5ft 6in (1.68m) and weight of 10st 7lb (67kg), presents an agile player apt for his position. International recognition came for Szmodics in the form of an invitation to represent the Republic of Ireland's national team.
In September 2013, Szmodics accepted a contract from League Two club Colchester United. Over the course of the 2013 to 2018 seasons, he amassed a solid tally of appearances, totalling for 84 league matches and scoring on 26 occasions. During the 2015-2016 season, Szmodics was briefly loaned to Braintree Town in the National League, where he found the back of the net twice in three appearances before returning to Colchester United to complete his contract.
July 2019 marked the beginning of a new chapter for Szmodics, with a transfer to Bristol City in the Championship owing to a fee of approximately £750k. His tenure was short-lived, and by January 2020 he was heading towards Peterborough United of League One on loan.
By September 2020, after representing Bristol City in only three league appearances, Szmodics transferred permanently to Peterborough United for a reported fee of about £940k. Over two seasons, he racked up 37 league appearances and netted six goals.
Blackburn Rovers sealed the signature of Szmodics in August 2022 on a transfer fee totalling around £1.7m. At Blackburn, he had a prolific period scoring 33 goals in 79 league appearances over the 2022 to 2025 seasons.
A substantial offer, purportedly around the region of £10m, led to Szmodics switching loyalties again. This time around, he joined Ipswich Town in August 2024. Although his performances were credible, his goal tally during the 2024 - 2026 seasons was pared down to a far more modest five goals in 36 appearances.
The latest move in Szmodics' career saw him loaned out to Derby County in February 2026. He's made a fair start to his new stint, netting twice in his first eight appearances. In the international scene, Szmodics' contribution to the Republic of Ireland isn't extensive, limited to a singular start and substitute appearance during the 2024 - 2026 World Cup Qualifiers.
