Sammie Szmodics, born on 24 September 1995 (age 30), is a Republic of Ireland international with a career built rather than announced. A compact attacker at 5ft 6in (1.68m), he came through at Colchester United, with an early loan spell helping move him from promising academy player to senior footballer.
His route was not especially glamorous, which is often the point. After Colchester, he moved through Bristol City and Peterborough United before finding his sharpest league form at Blackburn Rovers. The 2023-2024 season was the clear peak so far: 27 league goals in 44 appearances, a return that made him rather harder to ignore.
Ipswich Town took him on after that Blackburn season, and he has remained a regular first-team presence in 2025-2026. Used primarily from the left, he has made 31 appearances in all competitions for Ipswich this season, scoring four goals, including 29 Championship appearances.
He has also stayed involved with the Republic of Ireland, making two appearances in European World Cup qualifying this season. His career has been one of steady progression: lower-league grounding, a standout year at Blackburn, and a continuing role at Ipswich rather than a brief spell on the edge of the side.
