Originally a player for Tromsdalen in Norway's 2. Divisjon, Tounekti made a switch to Bodo Glimt in the Eliteserien in March 2020 for an undisclosed fee. Despite the limited opportunities in his introductory season, where he managed a solitary goal from nine league appearances, Tounekti persisted and was able to make five more appearances in the following season.
In August 2021, the winger was on the move again, this time heading to FC Groningen in the Eredivisie in Netherlands on a loan deal. Tounekti returned to Bodo Glimt in June 2022, having completed his loan period. He was then sold to Haugesund in Norway's OBOS-ligaen in August 2022, again for an uncertain fee.
Across his stint at Haugesund from 2022 to 2024, Tounekti reinforced his caliber with regular performances. He made five first-team appearances in his initial season, seven in the subsequent season, and raised the bar in 2024 with 29 appearances and an impressive contribution of four goals.
His consistent performances caught the interest of Hammarby IF in the Allsvenskan in Sweden, and the club secured his services in February 2025 for a fee rounded off to £1 million. At Hammarby, he delivered one of his finest seasons yet, featuring in 21 league matches and adding two goals to his tally.
In September 2025, the Scottish Premiership club Celtic, recognised Tounekti's potential and invested an undisclosed amount to bring him to Scotland. So far in the ongoing 2025-2026 season, he has made 13 first team appearances and already found the net once.
Besides club duties, Tounekti has also shone in various competitions. In the Africa CON 2025, he had a start and two appearances as a substitute for Tunisia. He also participated in the League Cup 2025-2026 for Celtic, scoring a goal across three starts, whilst adding another in a single appearance as a substitute in the Scottish Cup 2025-2026. Moreover, he took part in the World Cup Qualifiers Africa 2024-2026 for Tunisia and has five starts and a substitute appearance in the Europa League 2025-2026 for Celtic.
