Born on 8th October 1972, Stanislav Varga hails from Slovakia. Standing at 6ft 4in (1.94m) and weighing 14st 2lb (90kg), he is a robust figure, primarily functioning as a central defender. His football journey began in July 1993 with 1. FC Tatran Prešov in the 2. Liga in Slovakia.
In July 1998, Varga made the move from 1. FC Tatran Prešov to Slovan Bratislava, a First Football League team in Slovakia. His inaugural season at Slovan Bratislava saw him make 28 first team appearances alongside scoring three goals in league matches. The following season, he maintained his strong performance, making an identical number of appearances but increasing his goal tally to nine in league matches.
Varga made his move to English football with Sunderland in the Championship league in July 2000. The transfer fee was around £880k. His initial time at Sunderland was a mixed bag - he made 12 appearances and scored a single goal in the 2000 - 2001 season and made nine appearances in the following season. He also had a loan spell with West Bromwich Albion in March 2002, making four appearances in the remainder of the 2001 - 2002 season.
However, it was in January 2003 that Varga made his mark in Scottish football history. He transferred to Celtic in the Premiership, marking the beginning of a relationship that lasted several years. The 2002 — 2003 season did not see Varga's full potential as he made only one appearance in the league matches.
The 2003 - 2004 season at Celtic saw Varga finally coming into his own, making 35 first team appearances and scoring six goals in league matches. Throughout the 2004 - 2005 season, he continued his strong performance with 34 appearances and three goals. However, his appearances dipped to ten with only one goal in the 2005 - 2006 season.
Varga returned to Sunderland in August 2006 for a fee of around £100k. His return to Sunderland was a more fruitful one, seeing him made 20 first team appearances and scoring a single goal in the 2006 - 2007 season.
In January 2008, Varga moved to Burnley in the Championship on loan where he made ten first team appearances in league matches. Upon the completion of his loan in May 2008, he returned to Sunderland. However, his stint did not last long, and in the same month, he transferred from Sunderland, marking the end of his professional football journey.
