Stephen Welsh was born in Coatbridge on 19 January 2000 (age 26), and his career has been shaped almost entirely by Celtic. A commanding 6ft 3in (1.91m) central defender, he joined the club from Greenock Morton in January 2020 and has remained part of the first-team picture since.
Welsh’s best run of league football at Celtic came in 2020-2021, when he made 16 appearances and scored once. Across seven seasons he has made 43 league appearances for the club, with two league goals. That does not make him a fixture, but it does make him a familiar and useful squad defender, which is no small thing at Celtic.
His Celtic spell has also brought a substantial medal haul: five Premiership titles, three League Cups and two Scottish Cups. He has had to earn his minutes around more established centre-halves, but he has still been involved through a highly successful period for the club.
Loan football has played its part in his development. In 2025-2026 he made one league appearance for Celtic and 27 on loan at Motherwell, scoring once, a stretch of regular football that mattered more than sitting politely in the queue at Lennoxtown. His current market value is around £1.5m, according to Transfermarkt.
Welsh remains a Celtic player and a Scotland centre-back whose career is still largely bound to the club that brought him through. His story so far is one of patience, squad value and enough first-team exposure to keep him relevant.
