Born on the 29th of March 1969, Englishman Steve Guppy enjoyed a noteworthy career as a midfielder, primarily playing in the role of a left attacking midfielder. Standing at 5ft 10in tall (1.8 meters) and weighing in at a steady 10st 9lb (68kg), Guppy first entered the professional football scene by joining England's League One side, Wycombe Wanderers, in July 1993. A strong and steady start saw him making 41 appearances and putting up eight goals in league play throughout his debut season.
July 1994 heralded a big move for Guppy, as he switched to Premier League giants, Newcastle United, for a fee estimated at £150k. The following year, in January 1995, Guppy transferred to League Two outfit Port Vale, with the fee expected to be around £230k. As a notable part of Port Vale's makeup, Guppy played an impressive number of matches through to the 1996-97 season.
In February 1997, Guppy departed Port Vale to join Premier League side Leicester City for a sum close to £850k. His tenure with the Foxes saw regular appearances and a steady flow of goals until August 2001, when he packed his bags for the Scottish Premiership with a move to Celtic. The fee for the transfer was reportedly around £700k.
Guppy's stint with Celtic turned out to be quite productive, with 16 and 17 first-team appearances made during the 2001-2002 and 2002-2003 seasons respectively. Celtic fans certainly appreciated his years of service, however brief.
In January 2004, Guppy returned to England from Celtic, rejoining Leicester City. He then bounced around several different clubs over the following years; Leeds United, Stoke City, a return to Wycombe Wanderers, D.C. United in the United States, and finally Stevenage in England.
While undoubtedly a well-travelled footballer, Steve Guppy is most fondly remembered for his time with Celtic and Leicester City.
