Tomás Araújo, born on 16 May 2002 (age 24), is a Portuguese central defender whose senior career has been shaped chiefly at Benfica. Wearing squad number 44, he has made 74 league appearances for the club across five seasons, scoring three times.
His development was helped by a 2022-23 loan to Gil Vicente, where he made 22 league appearances and scored once. It was his most productive league season to date and gave him regular senior football away from Benfica, rather than the odd cameo that does little for a young defender.
Back at Benfica, Araújo has continued to build his place in the squad. In 2026-27 he has made seven Liga Portugal appearances, along with three in Europa League qualifying – scoring once – and one in the Europa League proper. He has also represented Portugal this season, appearing once in the World Cup and once in the Nations League.
His career remains centred on Benfica, with Gil Vicente serving as the useful early staging post. At 24, he is an established first-team option rather than a finished article.
