Tomoki Iwata, a central defensive midfielder hailing from Japan, was born on 7 April 1997. He's currently plying his trade at Birmingham City in the middle of the park. Stand at a sturdy 5 feet 10 inches (1.78m) and weighing in at 12 stone 1 pound (77kg), he's a physical presence in any line-up.
Iwata's market value is noted at around £980k as Transfermarkt reports. His current contract with Birmingham runs until 30 June 2027, giving him almost three more years at the club.
Prior to joining Birmingham, Iwata started his professional career at Oita Trinita in the Japanese J2 League. This was in January 2015. In his first season in 2017, Iwata made nine first team appearances, building on this in later years, putting in 30 and 27 appearances in the 2019 and 2020 seasons respectively, contributing a total of six goals.
Iwata moved from Oita Trinita to Yokohama F. Marinos in the upper tier J1 League in 2021. In his time at Yokohama, Iwata remained a regular feature on the team sheet with 34 and 32 league appearances over two years.
Celtic came calling for Iwata’s services in January 2023. Initially joining the Scottish club on loan, he made 13 appearances in his debut season. The Japanese midfielder had clearly left an impression at Celtic, as he was signed permanently by the club in July the very same year.
The 2023-2024 season saw Iwata fully established at Celtic, making 19 appearances and adding a goal to his contributions. Despite a promising spell at Celtic, in August 2024, Iwata swapped the Scottish Premiership for English football, securing a move to Birmingham City in a deal worth around £830k.
In his current season with Birmingham, however, Iwata has yet to make his league debut. A fresh chapter in his career still waits to be inked.
