Vaclav Cerny, born in the Czech Republic on 17 October 1997, is a 5ft 10in (1.78m) forward who primarily plays as a right winger, and has the dubious honour of calling Rangers his current employer. Cerny is evidently not a fan of overeating, weighing a reasonable 10st 9lb (68kg), and skulks around the football pitch cloaked in the number 18 jersey. On occasion, he has also turned out for the Czech Republic national team, although whether they're pleased about this fact, one can't be certain.
Sources that spend their days calculating this sort of nonsense, such as Transfermarkt, believe that Cerny has a market value around the £6m mark. His stint at Rangers, whether you think it well-spent or not, is scheduled to end on 30 June 2025.
Throughout this thrill-a-minute 2024 - 2025 season, he has graced the Premiership with his presence three times, managing to score a whole goal. Astonishingly, this professional footballer has managed to get off the bench to start twice and even made a cameo appearance as a substitute. There were also appearances in the League Cup, Euros, Euro qualifiers and Champions League qualifiers. An impressive list to be sure, if you're into that sort of thing.
Of course, life before Rangers was a veritable cavalcade of glamour for young Cerny. There was a £650k move from 1. FK Příbram in the Czech Republic to the windmills of Ajax in the Netherlands in January 2014. This exhilarating period saw him make a total of 16 league appearances, with a single goal as evidence of his time.
Then, presumably bored of Ajax life, he was shipped off to FC Utrecht for a chest-thumping £680k. More match appearances followed, with another goal to add to the collection. Shortly thereafter, Cerny found himself loaned to FC Twente, and then sold to the same for the princely sum of £860k.
His stay at FC Twente provided ample opportunity to bolster his stats, and he did just that, taking to the field 66 times and bagging 20 goals in the process. Clearly, the big leagues were calling, as he then transferred to Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga in Germany for a comparatively staggering £7.7m. More matches, more goals.
Then, evidently taking leave of his senses, Cerny chose to swap the Bundesliga for the slightly less illustrious pastures of the Scottish Premiership. He's currently on loan at Rangers. Money well spent? We'll see.
