Vasilis Barkas was born in Zetten, Netherlands, on 30 May 1994 (age 32), and represents Greece. A commanding 6ft 5in (1.96m) goalkeeper, he came through in Greek football, with a 12-appearance league season at Atromitos in 2015–16 before moving on to AEK Athens.

Celtic brought him in from AEK in July 2020 for around £5m, a serious fee for a goalkeeper and one that inevitably carried scrutiny. His time in Glasgow did not settle into the kind of long-term answer the club were looking for, and he left in July 2023 for FC Utrecht.

At Utrecht, Barkas has rebuilt himself as a regular No. 1 rather than a name remembered only for an awkward Celtic spell. In 2025–26, he has made 33 Eredivisie appearances, along with further outings in Europe, the KNVB Beker and the European play-offs, taking him to 48 appearances in all competitions for the season.

His current market value is around £3m, according to Transfermarkt. Barkas remains an established first-team goalkeeper at FC Utrecht, having moved from Greece to Celtic and then on to the Netherlands.

Vasilis Barkas was a regular for FC Utrecht in 2025-26, making 33 Eredivisie appearances and starting every one of them. He also played 15 cup and European matches, taking him to 48 appearances across all listed competitions. For a goalkeeper who left Celtic after a failed spell, that volume pointed to a clear first-choice role and a stable place in Utrecht’s side.

Barkas’s career moved from Atromitos to AEK Athens, then to Celtic in 2020, before he rebuilt his minutes at FC Utrecht. The Celtic move was the high-profile step, but the subsequent loan and permanent switch to the Netherlands showed a career reset rather than a straight upward progression.

The transfer history is stark from a Celtic perspective: Barkas arrived from AEK Athens for a 5.0m fee in 2020, was loaned to FC Utrecht in 2022, then left Celtic for Utrecht on a free transfer in 2023. That sequence underlined a costly recruitment miss, with Utrecht gaining an experienced goalkeeper without a fee.
