Vasilis Barkas was born in Zetten, Netherlands, on 30 May 1994 (age 32), and represents Greece. A commanding 6ft 5in (1.96m) goalkeeper, he came through in Greek football, with a 12-appearance league season at Atromitos in 2015–16 before moving on to AEK Athens.
Celtic brought him in from AEK in July 2020 for around £5m, a serious fee for a goalkeeper and one that inevitably carried scrutiny. His time in Glasgow did not settle into the kind of long-term answer the club were looking for, and he left in July 2023 for FC Utrecht.
At Utrecht, Barkas has rebuilt himself as a regular No. 1 rather than a name remembered only for an awkward Celtic spell. In 2025–26, he has made 33 Eredivisie appearances, along with further outings in Europe, the KNVB Beker and the European play-offs, taking him to 48 appearances in all competitions for the season.
His current market value is around £3m, according to Transfermarkt. Barkas remains an established first-team goalkeeper at FC Utrecht, having moved from Greece to Celtic and then on to the Netherlands.
