Oh, joy. Another young hopeful to add to the ever-bursting Scottish football pantheon. We have Alexander Smith, a date of birth being 26 June 2008, which places him at the tender age of 17. The trouble with these young ones is that they spring up like mushrooms in a vegetable patch strewn with cowpat. One week they're playing football in the park with their mates, the next they're sporting a numbered jersey and running around the pitch like they own it.
Alex, or should we say Alexander, since we are not on first-name terms, hails from somewhere in Scotland. Aye, Scotland, that hotbed of footballing talent. He's a midfielder, which presumably means he occupies that limbo-like role between defence and attack - a jack of all trades, master of none. Specifically, he's a central attacking midfielder - heaven help us. A position labelled with more importance and swagger than its occupier often deserves. In Alexander's case, he's seen gallivanting for Rangers, the club across the city, wearing the number 62. Sixty-two! If the number bears any significance, it's surely only to remind us all how long it's been since Scotland last had a world-class footballer.
