Born on the unremarkable day of September 10th 2003 in the far-flung reaches of Mauritania, Djeidi Gassama, now 22 years of subtle aging, is garbed in the somewhat distasteful style of a left winger for the Rangers. The lad stands proud at a lofty 5ft 9in (or 1.77m for those who dabble in foreign measurements) and tips the scales at a respectable 11st (or 70kg if you'd rather). He's latched onto jersey number 23, which I can only hope he wears with something resembling honour.
The value of the man was conveniently appraised by Transfermarkt, who priced him at a rough approximation of £6m. The mind boggles.
Gassama's adventure in football, if you'd like to call it that, began in 2019 when he found himself under the wing of the renowned Paris Saint-Germain in the all too romantic Ligue 1 in France. True to form, the lad made a single meagre appearance during his debut season of 2021 - 2022. One could only hope his seat was comfortable.
Seemingly dissatisfied with his French escapade, in September 2022 Gassama meandered his way to Eupen in Belgium's Challenger Pro League. Here he bestowed upon us season 2022 - 2023, where he graced the field with his presence 19 times and fell over the line with the ball – twice. Astonishing.
By 2023, Gassama absconded from the French embrace of Paris Saint-Germain to dip his toe into England's Championship league, alighting at Sheffield Wednesday for a sum that no one has managed to discern. In his debut season here, he 'impressed' with 35 appearances and three goals. He followed this up with a 'flurry' of seven goals 'bursting' from his 43 appearances in the 2024 – 2025 season.
Finally, in the summer of 2025, Gassama travelled north to join the ranks of the Rangers in Scotland's Premiership, apparently worth around a hefty £2.2m. In the current season he has gambolled his way through a grand total of 29 matches, scoring a mere twice. I can only marvel at his consistency.
For those of you still following the wide-reaching exploits of Gassama, he played his part in the 2025 - 2026 League Cup and Scottish Cup for the Rangers with a pair of starts and substitute appearances. In the Champions League Qualifiers, our heroic Mauritanian blasted in four goals from six appearances. The Europa League bore witness to his talents as well, with two goals from eight starts. An illustrious career, no doubt.
