Jack Butland, born on 10 March 1993, is an English goalkeeper currently holding the fort for Rangers. A towering figure in goal at 6ft 5in (1.96m) and tipping the scales at a robust 14st 11lb (94kg), he's garnered quite a reputation in his number 1 jersey.
According to Transfermarkt, he's worth about a million and a half quid in the current market. Not exactly change you'd find down the back of the sofa, but hardly the price tag to make a Celtic fan weep into their pint either.
Butland's career kicked off with Birmingham City back in July 2010, where he pulled his gloves on for a commendable 46 league matches in the 2012-2013 season. Now here's where things get interesting. In-between his times at Birmingham, Butland had a short-term relocation project to Cheltenham Town in September 2011, playing 24 times in the league before returning to his starting point.
Feeling a little like a human yoyo, Butland swapped the blue of Birmingham for Stoke City in July 2013, costing Stoke a decent £3.5m. But Butland's career didn't exactly take off like a rocket there. Among sporadic appearances and couple of loan deals to Barnsley, Leeds United, and Derby County, his most eventful season with Stoke was the 2018-2019 season where he managed a whopping 45 league appearances. Blink, and you'd have missed him on the pitch in the other seasons.
After his grand tour round the lower leagues of England, Butland found himself transferred to the illustrious ‘big time’ of Crystal Palace for a fee of about £1m in October 2020. His stint there was, and let's be kind here, less than earth-shattering, with a meagre 10 league appearances over two seasons.
Following a fleeting loan to Manchester United in January 2023, Butland took his gloves and water bottle across the border to play for Rangers, in July 2023. Now, in the 2025-2026 season, Butland seems to have found a home at Rangers, with 28 starts this season and participation in the League Cup, Champions League Qualifiers, and the Europa League.
It's safe to say that Butland's career has been a bit of a merry-go-round, but with his current stint at Rangers he seems to be finding a bit more stability. Not that we're particularly bothered.
