There's no denying that football, much like life, is a game of 'comings and goings'. Jack Butland, a lanky specimen of a man at 6ft 5in (or 1.96m for our metric friends) and weighing 14st 11lb (that's 94kg), is well versed in this dance. The goalie was born in the motherland of football itself, England, on the 10th of March 1993.
The English goalkeeper started his professional career at Birmingham City in July 2010 in the Championship. We got a first peek at him in goal during the 2012-2013 season when he made 46 appearances. A brief stint at Cheltenham Town in the 2011-2012 season saw him making 24 appearances before he returned to Birmingham City, quite the jet setter it seems.
According to our friends over at Transfermarkt, Butland is currently valued at around £1.5 million, a price tag that would have seemed astronomical back in July 2013 when he moved to Stoke City for about £3.5 million. Ever the rolling stone, he had several loan stints at Barnsley, Leeds United, and Derby County, before finally settling down at Stoke City.
Those were good days for Jack, playing for Stoke City, passing the ball and denying goals. Going from a mere three appearances in the 2013-2014 and 2014-2015 seasons to racking up 31 appearances between the sticks for the 2015-2016 season. Butland was in his prime, fluttering about from one post to another like an oversized moth entranced by the spherical orb that is the football.
But alas, the moth must eventually leave the lamp, and in October 2020, Butland transferred to Crystal Palace for a fee of around £1 million. After running around the fields in England, even making his mark on the Great Britain national team, Jack decided it was time for some deep-fried Mars bars and bagpipes as he joined the Scottish Premiership side Rangers in July 2023.
Here too, our roving goalie got a chance to flex his agile fingers, making 38 appearances in the 2023-2024 season, 28 in the 2024-2025 season and has already racked up 29 appearances in the current 2025-2026 season. He's doing the Hokey-Cokey with The League Cup, Champions League Qualifiers, and the Europa League for his new team, the Rangers, displaying the same tactical acumen and strength he has shown throughout his career, blocking shots and breaking hearts.
So there you have it, that was the whirlwind journey of Jack Butland, the Brechtian anti-hero, caught in the footballing equivalent of a bus route, continuously thrown from one club to another. The only thing consistent about his career is his number, number 1, a fitting symbol for a man who has continually strived to be just that."
