I'm sure there's a book somewhere titled "The Well-Travelled Footballer," and if it isn't, Nasser Djiga is offering ample inspiration. Born on a rather chilly November 15th, 2002, in Burkina Faso, he seemed destined for a life of give and take on the football pitch. Clearly favouring the role of a sturdy central defender, Djiga now pulls on the number 24 jersey for Rangers, a surprising choice might I say, seeming it’s famously been worn by goal keepers more often than not, but I digress. The lad is respectfully proportioned at 6ft 1in (1.87m) and comes in at a reassuringly solid 12st 8lb (80kg). I suppose that's why he's a defender. He's also done his bit for Burkina Faso, bolstering the national team's back line when called upon.
You'd be interested to know that Djiga has a current market value of £5m, according to the enthusiastic number crunchers at Transfermarkt.
He embarked on his remarkable football journey with Vitesse in the Premier League in his native Burkina Faso, then made a rather abrupt jump to Basel in the Super League in Switzerland in July 2021 for an undecipherable fee. I suppose the weather was a shock.
Despite this tectonic shift, he made six first team appearances in league matches during his debut season. However, between seasons 2022 and 2024 he managed a total of five league appearances, hardly a statistic to wax lyrical about.
Then, in a flash of Swiss efficiency, he was loaned to Nîmes in the Championnat National in France in August 2022, where he made a significantly better tally of 21 league appearances. No sooner he returned to Basel in July 2023, Djiga was shipped off again to grace the SuperLiga in Serbia with Red Star, again on loan.
There must have been something in the Serbian air, or maybe it was the food. Perhaps he relished their brand of football. Whatever it was, Red Star decided to make it official and purchased Djiga in July 2024 for roughly £2.1m, a decent haul for a club I'm sure.
In February 2025, Djiga was snapped up by Wolverhampton Wanderers in the English Premier League for some £10m, where he made five league appearances. By July 2025, he was gallivanting North, to Scottish Premiership side, Rangers, again on loan. In the current season, Djiga has made 16 appearances for Rangers, which is not to be sniffed at.
For good measure, and to prove he's not a one-trick pony, Djiga participated in a number of cup and league events, both domestically and internationally. In the Scottish Cup and the League Cup he’s made two starts each for his current club, his continental travels continue with six starts each in the Champions League Qualifiers and the Europa League as well. He’s not forgotten his country either, two starts and a cheeky substitute appearance in the World Cup Qualifiers Africa for Burkina Faso. Now that's a calendar to balance.
